Fireside Beanie- Free Crochet Pattern

Making a chunky, one skein beanie has been at the top of my to-do list for this upcoming fall/winter season for almost a year now.
When my baby sister asked if I could help make her bridesmaids gifts for her upcoming wedding (with 11 bridesmaids total), my first thought of a project that would be easy enough to make enough of in a short amount of time was the chunky beanie I’d been dreaming up.
After testing out a variety of stitch combinations, brim widths and hook sizes, I ended up with this luxurious Fireside Beanie.
I love how it turned out and have had so much fun making these!

What You’ll Need
11.5 mm crochet hook
1 skein of Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn- approximately 100 yards
1 faux fur pom
scissors
embroidery/ darning needle

Abbreviations Used
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
blo= back loops only
fo= fasten off
p/u= pick up
sl st= slip stitch
hdc= half double crochet
st= stitch
yo= yarn over
pu=pull up [a loop]
Special Stitches
Star stitch: ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pu (2 loops on hook), insert into 3rd ch from hook, yo, pu (3 loops on hook), insert into 1st st, yo and pu (4 loops on hook), insert into next st, yo and pu (5 loops on hook), insert into next st, yo and pu (6 loops on hook), yo pull through all 6 loops, yo and pu creating the “eye” of the star (1 loop on hook: first star created). *insert hook into “eye” of star yo, pu (2 loops on hook), insert into last spike of the star, yo, pu (3 loops on hook), insert hook into same st as last spike, yo, pu (4 loops on hook), insert into next st, yo and pu (5 loops on hook), insert into next st, yo and pu (6 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all 6 loops, yo and pu (1 loop on hook: second star created). Repeat from *. End last star stitch by working last yo and pu into the top of the ch 3 that started the round.
Camel Stitch: hdc into 3rd loop of previous row’s hdc
HDC Decrease: yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pu loop (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into next st, yo and pu loop (5 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops.
Brim Pattern
Foundation: ch 8
Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in blo across, turn (7)
Row 2-44: ch 1, sc in blo across, turn. fo at end of row 44 leaving tail (7)
Using tail, mattress stitch first row to last row to create a cylinder.
Beanie Pattern
Foundation: p/u sc stitches in each row around, sl st into first stitch (44)
Round 1: star stitch around (22 stars created)
Round 2: ch 1, hdc 2 into each “eye” around, sl st into ch 1 (44)
Round 3: ch 1, Camel stitch around, sl st into 1st st (44)
Round 4: Work star stitch pattern into 3rd loops of the hdc sts from previous round- creating the camel stitch look (22 stars created)
Round 5- 7: repeat rounds 2-4
Round 8: ch 1, hdc 2 into each “eye” around, sl st into 1st ch 1 (44)
Round 9: ch 1, hdc decrease around, fo leaving tail. (22)
Using embroidery/ darning needle, weave tail in and out of every few stitches around, pull to close top of beanie. Weave between any gapping and tie off. Attach Pom Pom to top of beanie. Weave in all ends.

What stitches are you using in your gauge swatch?
Hey Jennifer! So sorry about that- I keep forgetting to make the adjustment on the post, it’s measured agains the brim pattern- so single crochets in the back loops only. Hope this helps!
How are you attaching pom pom to hat?
The poms I use have 2 tails that I string through the top on either side of the closing hole and tie tight. If your poms don’t have tails, you can use a metal embroidery needle to weave a strand of embroidery floss through the bottom of your pom. Hope that helps! 😊

Thanks for reaching out! This video tutorial from The Crochet Crowd is my top recommendation when trying to figure out the Star Stitch: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2FM4xpCxQfc
The only differences are that you will be working in the round for my pattern, so you do not need to follow the video’s suggestion of how to turn the work. They also chose to sc in the second row of the star stitch, whereas you’ll need HDC for this pattern.

Beanie looks so cute! How would I make this for a child? Should I just go down to a 8.5 maybe 7? I will be using an acrylic yarn. Not to sure what I should do.
Thanks so much Ashley! I’m glad you like it. I actually have a pattern for baby, toddler and child size under the pattern section of the blog. Titled “Mommy & Me Fireside Beanie”. The switch to acrylic yarn will be fun! I’d just recommend swatching it out with different hooks until you get the right gauge. Gauge is measured on the back loop only portion of the ribbing. That’ll help you decide the best hook for the yarn your using, as yarn varies so much in bulkiness. Hope this helps! 😀

Oh yay! So happy you like it. The easiest modification I can think of would be to drop your hook size (I went 2.5 sizes up from the recommended size on my yarn skein) and to increase the ribbing rows and stitch count around. You’ll want to increase the ribbing rows to an even number that gets you approximately 20” length. Then work that same amount into your foundation for the beanie. You could also try adding an extra round to each camel stitch section to achieve the height needed. I haven’t personally tried any of this, but that’s where I’d start if I did. Hope it helps! 🙂
